How to use it

1. Open the best-selling product page in your Shopify store.

2. Go down the list and tick what's already true.

3. Whatever stays unticked is where the sales are leaking.

Most Shopify stores don't need a new brand. They need the right things on the first screen of a phone. These are the checks I run on a store before I redesign anything.

01

The 4 fixes I check first

0 / 4

If you only have ten minutes, do these four.

  • Summer Fridays: photo, name and Add to bag on the first screen.
  • Jolie: free shipping, a 60-day trial and the price on the first screen.
  • Brooklinen: stars and review count sit right above the price.
02

The first screen on a phone

0 / 6

Most of your traffic is on a phone. Shopify's own design guide cites Dynamic Yield data: mobile is about 75% of visits.

  • Olipop: flavour, can and price all on the first phone screen.
  • Jones Road: one slim bar, a small header, then the product.
  • Kitsch: product, type and outcome in one title line.
  • Graza: taste, use and ingredients in three short lines.
  • Kitsch: dots under the photo, and the next image peeks in.
03

The buy button

0 / 5
  • Mindbodygreen: the Shop now bar stays pinned as you scroll.
  • Caraway: $675 crossed out, $445 in bold, Save $230 in red.
  • Spacegoods: delivery date above the button, guarantee below.
  • Beardbrand: three badges under Add to cart, each answers a worry.
04

Product info and images

0 / 8

Baymard's research, cited by Shopify, found 56% of shoppers go straight to the images.

  • Mindbodygreen: one job per image: benefits, the jar, proof, label.
  • Boom Beauty: women over 50 with different skin tones.
  • Jolie: what it filters, then what that means for skin and hair.
  • LastObject: the details sit in three tap-to-open rows.
  • Spacegoods: six ticks for their blend, six crosses for coffee.
  • Allbirds: a one-line fit note and Fit Guide link under the sizes.
  • Huel: From $2.65 per meal, right under the product name.
05

Reviews and proof

0 / 9
  • Scandinavian Biolabs: small, plain stars under the product name.
  • Mindbodygreen: one quote naming the main benefit, inside the buy box.
  • Snow: a five-star review with the customer's own photo.
  • Scandinavian Biolabs: a 'skeptical at first' review with photos.
  • Boom Beauty: 4.3 stars, with 3 and 4 star counts in plain sight.
  • Spacegoods: 4.5 stars on Trustpilot, above the product name.
  • Spacegoods: an FAQ that answers real doubts, one tap each.
  • Four Sigmatic: 60-day Money Back Guarantee, right under the button.
06

Order value: bundles, cart, checkout

0 / 7

You already paid to get this visitor. These checks make each order worth more.

  • Frey: 2 and 3 packs show the old price crossed out and the saving.
  • Four Sigmatic: Subscribe & Save at $28 above Try Once at $40.
  • Four Sigmatic: $21 away from free shipping, then a free gift.
  • Jones Road: the bag slides in over the page you were on.
  • Frey: three $15 add-ons in the cart, one tap each.
  • LastObject: Shop Pay, PayPal and Google Pay above the form.
07

Speed

0 / 4
  • PageSpeed Insights, Frey's page: Core Web Vitals passed, LCP 1.9 s.
  • TinyPNG: one product photo, 732 KB down to 276 KB.
  • Frey: one still photo, a headline and one button. No video.
08

Collection pages

0 / 5

A collection page has two jobs: show the products, and help people narrow them down.

  • Olipop: one short line, then cans two per row.
  • Graza: filter buttons above the grid, one tap each.
  • Fly By Jing: one Best Seller sticker, the card beside it stays clean.
  • Thinx: the collection opens sorted by Best selling.
  • Graza: look-alike bottles, each card names its job.
09

Homepage

0 / 7

Most homepages don't have a traffic problem. They have a clarity problem.

  • Boom Beauty: what it is, who it's for and why, in two lines.
  • Jolie: one big idea up top: Beauty starts with clean water.
  • Snow: one button in the hero, Shop the pen.
  • Bombas: the bar carries two real offers, a code and free shipping.
  • Magic Spoon: four best sellers, each with price, stars and a button.
  • Liquid I.V.: a product hero, then best sellers with prices.
  • Graza: email on top, site below. Same lime green, logo and typewriter text.
Graza site: the same lime green, logo and typewriter-style text.

What not to copy from dropshipping tutorials

Have you noticed that half the YouTube tutorials on Shopify design are actually made for dropshippers? These tips would hurt a real brand:

  • Importing reviews from AliExpress or Amazon for a product that isn't yours. Your customers will find out.
  • AI-made reviews and customer photos, or before-and-afters pulled from Google. One screenshot in a Reddit thread and the trust is gone.
  • Countdown timers that reset and "only 3 left" when it isn't true. Daniel Budai says shoppers are now very sceptical of these. Real scarcity works: real stock levels, a real end date.
  • Price tricks, like making the compare-at price bigger than the real one so it looks cheaper.
  • Testing button colours before the offer and the message are right. Sabri Suby calls button colour a "one-percenter". Fix the hook and the offer first.

How to test a change

The maths is why this matters. 10,000 visitors a month at a 2% conversion rate is 200 orders. At 4% it's 400 orders, from the same traffic and the same ad spend.

  1. Change one thing at a time. Change three and you won't know which one worked.
  2. Give it at least two weeks and about 100 orders per version before you call a winner. With fewer, the result is mostly luck. Shopify's own tool is Rollouts; Shoplift, Intelligems and VWO also work.
  3. Watch revenue per visitor, not only conversion rate. A higher conversion rate that lowers your order value can leave you worse off.
  4. Check the traffic before you blame the page. In one Shopify example, a $30 gap in order value between two page versions turned out to be a weak ad sending poor traffic.
